Smith Astro Turf Field

Overview

The Smith College Turf Field is the premier home of the Bears' field hockey and lacrosse programs. Newly upgraded in the summer of 2025, the facility features AstroTurf’s Poligras Paris GT Zero—the exact surface developed for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

As the world’s first and only carbon-zero hockey turf, it is FIH Innovation-certified for dry hockey and stands as the choice surface for USA Field Hockey. This state-of-the-art pitch represents the absolute zenith of athletic technology, providing Smith student-athletes with an unmatched level of quality, speed, and performance.

History and Dedication

Original Dedication: September 17, 2010
The Vision: The field was made possible through the leadership philanthropy of Dr. Trudi Cloyd and the collective generosity of alumnae, parents, and friends. Their commitment honors the profound value of collegiate athletics and the inspiring role coaches play in both sport and life.
In Honor Of: The facility proudly honors Judith "Judy" Strong, a two-time US Olympic Field Hockey Team member who dedicated 20 years (1987–2007) to coaching the Smith College field hockey and lacrosse programs.

Facility Features

Lighting: Full night-game capability courtesy of four 60-foot-high light towers.
Seating: Dedicated bleacher seating for spectators.
Scoreboard: Advanced electronic LED scoreboard, fully equipped to display penalty times.
Audio: Permanent sound system with public address (PA) controls housed in the press box.
Connectivity: High-speed wireless internet access available throughout the facility.
Amenities: Restroom facilities are located directly in the Fieldhouse. Please note: Visiting locker rooms are not available at the field; teams should utilize the locker facilities in Ainsworth/Scott Gymnasiums.
