Stein's Seventh Snaps Smith's Streak

October 14, 2010

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Dari Goulden netted a brace and Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) scored for the third time in four games as the Smith College field hockey squad topped Western New England College 3-2 on Thursday night.

The win, which snapped a four game losing streak for the Pioneers (4-7), who won for the first time since September 22. The loss dropped the Golden Bears to 5-10.

The Pioneers had two good chances early on, but Nia Spooner and Allie Stein  were stymied by Golden Bears' goaltender Brittney O'Brien. WNEC broke through on Lindsey Lalonde's goal in the 16th minute, but Goulden knotted up the score just four minutes later when Natalie Wickles set her up on a penalty corner.

1-1 remained the score at halftime, and the Golden Bears retook the lead five minutes into the second half on Jaynie Mueller's tally.

Smith poured on the pressure, earning six second half penalty corners, and were rewarded with Goulden's second goal of the game, when she knocked home a pass from Stein at the 46:45 mark.

15 minutes later, Stein gave Smith the lead for good when she fired in a shot that was blocked right back to her, and the followup attempt soared past O'Brien. The goal was Stein's team high seventh of the season, and her second game winning goal.

Savannah Lawson made 10 saves, seven of which came in the first half as Smith soaked up the pressure from WNEC.

Smith will return to conference play this weekend with a trip to Wellesley on Saturday, October 16.  The game begins at 12 p.m.
