Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Wheaton College (Mass.) used a pair of second half goals to pull away from Smith College in a 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conferece (NEWMAC) field hockey action.
Smith drops to 4-10 overall, and 0-7 in NEWMAC play with the loss. The Lyons improve to 12-5, and 6-2 in NEWMAC competition.
The game was just seven minutes old when the Lyons were awarded a penalty stroke, converted by Aliza Underhill for a 1-0 lead. Smith responded with immediate pressure, with
Dari Goulden forcing a save from Wheaton goalie Ellie Massengill on a breakaway attempt. After Massengill saved from
Lena von Schorlemer, Goulden's penalty corner set up
Phoebe Hopkins for a just that whistled wide at the 16:16 mark.
The Pioneers drew level three minutes before halftime.
Ashleigh King's long distance shot was knocked down by Massengill, but
Rebecca Rosen was on hand to slip home the rebound for her third goal of the season and send the teams into the break even.
Wheaton took the lead back early in the second half, with Underhill's penalty corner rattling around the box before Eliza Kennedy netted her first goal of the season for a 2-1 lead. Smith again responded by forcing a penalty corner, but Massengill, who finished with eight saves, stuffed Hopkins' close range attempt. The Lyons added a third on Jenna Rocha's unassisted tally in the 53rd minute.
Savannah Lawson made nine saves for Smith, turning away a tide of Wheaton attacks in the final five minutes. The Lyons held a slim 15-10 edge in shots.
Smith will take a break in NEWMAC play, playing host to Keene State College in their home finale on October 28 at 4 p.m. Wheaton has concluded their NEWMAC schedule, and finish out the season with a trip to upstate New York to take on Skidmore on October 30.
