Smith College Closes Out Home Slate With Loss To Keene State

October 28, 2010

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Savannah Lawson had her fifth game with double-digit saves, but it was not enough to keep Smith College from falling to Keene State College 3-0 in a non-conference game on Thursday afternoon.

The Pioneers (4-11) put the Owls (14-5) under early pressure, as Lena von Schorlemer (Frankfurt, Germany/European School of Frankfurt) forced a pair of early saves out of KSC goalie Meghan Ledoux.  Dari Goulden also went close with a shot that Ledoux saved at the 3:03 mark, but 51 seconds later, Jacki Benson netted an unassisted tally to give Keene State a 1-0 lead.

Smith continued to press, as Goulden's corner led to a goal-bound attempt by Phoebe Hopkins that was stuffed by Ledoux.  Meanwhile, Lawson was keeping the Owls grounded by saving two shots from Chelsea Blackmer and another from Alexandra Billert that kept the score 1-0 at halftime.

Blackmer did beat Lawson seven minutes into the second half to double the lead, and Kalin Billert added a third with four minutes to play, but Lawson kept the Owls from increasing the scoreline with saves on shots from Niki Smith and Patty Pomerleau.

Smith nearly poked home a goal in the 56th minute when Rebecca Rosen deflected a shot from the point, but the attempt was just wide of the mark.

Lawson finished with 12 saves, her third highest toal of the year.  Ledoux finished with eight saves for KSC.

The Pioneers will finish up their season with a trip to NEWMAC foe WPI on Saturday, October 30, at 2 p.m.  Keene State will be at UMass-Dartmouth for a 4 p.m. start on October 30.
