Field Hockey Topped By MIT

October 04, 2010

Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Jessica Oleinik and Katie Kauffman each found the back of the net twice, as the MIT picked up a 6-1 win over visiting Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. The Engineers improved to 10-1 overall and sit in a three-way tie atop the conference at 3-0. Smith drops to 3-5 (0-3 NEWMAC) with the loss.

Kameron Klauber opened the scoring just 57 seconds into the game, stealing the ball in the midfield and carrying it into the circle, before firing a shot past Smith goalkeeper, Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard). Oleinik would then be involved in the next three MIT scores. Her first marker extended the Tech lead with just under 33 minutes remaining with an assist by Molly McShane. She then picked up a helper on Kauffman's first tally just over seven minutes later. The senior scored for the second time, and sixth time this season, in the 15th minute of the half to put the hosts up 4-0.

Alexandra Stein put the Pioneers on the board late in the first with an unassisted goal, her team leading fifth of the season

Keri Dixon had a solid effort in net for Tech, making three saves while allowing just the lone goal. Lawson was up to the challenge for Smith, stopping 14 shots.

Both teams will return to action on Tuesday, October 5 for a pair of conference tilts. Tech will travel to WPI for a 7:00 p.m. game while Smith welcomes Springfield College at 4:30 p.m.
