Savannah Lawson made 14 saves, but the Smith College field hockey team fell to Clark University 5-1 on Saturday afternoon in New England Men's & Women's Athletic Conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers dip to 3-7, 0-5 NEWMAC, while the win for Clark improves their record to 7-4, 1-3 in NEWMAC play.
Clark got on the board early, scoring the game's first goal as Mel Melkonian set up freshman Talia Fish for her ninth goal of the season at the 1:05 mark.
Nia Spooner's third goal of the season tied the game with help from
Alexandra Stein a little more than two minutes later, but Cougar freshman Kellee Kosiorek gave the lead back to Clark off a feed from Kate Condon.
Melkonian then netted the final goal of the half on an unassisted tally at 22:30. Clark added a pair of goals in the second half by Madeleine Lutts and Meghan Lennon to put the game away.
Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) turned back 14 shots for the Pioneers including nine in the first half. Kate McGrath made six saves in the cage for Clark
Smith is back in action on Thursday when they host Western New England, while Clark turns around for a home contest against Framingham State on Tuesday.
