BANGOR, Maine.--The Smith College swimming and diving team turned in their most complete performance of the season, toppling Husson College 216-65 on Saturday.
Eleven different Pioneers recorded victories, as well as both relay teams, as Smith earned their third win of the 2010-11 season.
Senior
Lily Seidman (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) led the way with a pair of wins, helping Smith to a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 yard freestyle. Seidman finished in 5:35.01, followed by classmate
Hillary Knight-Mitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) (6:13.07) and
Lauren Kauffman (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) (6:19.90). Seidman also won the 50 yard backstroke, reaching the touchpad just ahead of teammate
Emma Reim (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard), in a time of 31.19. Reim who finished in 33.79, notched her own victory with a triumph in the 100 yard backstroke, as Smith again took the top three places. Reim finished first in 1:10.24, just .15 seconds ahead of
Sarah Tucker (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic), and followed closely by
Kiara Gomez (Astoria, N.Y./HS For Health), who took third in 1:11.42.
In the 1-meter dive, Smith took the top five places, led by
Jenika Parson (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck), who took top spot with a score of 173.45.
Alexis-Clair Roehrich (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire) finished second with a score of 162.05, followed by
Karen Fryefield (Eugene, Ore./Eugene) (150.75),
Greylin Neilsen (Temple, N.H./Con-Val) (149.95), and
Margot Lurie (Newton, Mass./Newton South) (95.80).
Victoria Wu (Avon, Conn./Avon) was also part of two wins, as she swam the first leg of the winning 200 yard medley relay unit. She was joined by
Ariel Orr (Hamden, Conn./Harare International School), along with Reim and Kaufman in finishing in 2:03.70, for a 5.9 second win. In addition, Wu captured the 50 yard breaststoke in 35.32.
Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) turned in an impressive performance in winning the 1000 in 12:55.66, and
Rachael Gainer (Atlanta, Ga./Paidea School) took second place in a time of 13:04.61. Smith also took the top three in the 100 yard butterfly, led by
Rebecca Rosen (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley Regional), who won in a time of 1:07.50, with
Genesis Luviano (Santa Ana, Calif./Valley) taking second place in 1:14.78 and
Rebecca Chazin (Denver, Colo./George Washington) finishing third in 1:20.18.
Lenora Walter (Santa Ynez, Calif./Santa Ynez Valley) earned the win in the 100 yard breaststroke, with a time of 1:16.50, followed by
Reyna Levine (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) in second in 1:17.21 and Luviano grabbed third place in 1:20.67. Roehrich captured the 3-meter dive, with a score of 227.05 as Smith again took the top five spots. Parson was right behind in second place, scoring 208.80, and Neilsen took third with a score of 169.45. Fryefield placed fourth with 149.95 and Lurie added a fifth place spot with a score 104.40.
Smith's wins continued with another top three sweep in the 200 individual medley, led by
Mackenzie Bradley (Sherwood, Ore./Sherwood)'s first place time of 2:29.85, followed closely
Robin Currens (Frederick, Md./Gov. Johnson) (2:31.63) and Swensen (2:35.85). Currens earned an individual win in the 50 yard butterfly, squeaking past Husson's Amanda Mason to win by less than a second. The relay team of Gainer, Kauffman, Levine, and
Rebekah Renfro (Rockledge, Fla./Eau Gallie) combined to win the 200 yard freestyle relay in 1:56.15, led by Kauffman's second leg in 26.23. Kauffman also captured the 50 yard freestyle in 26.93.
The Pioneers will head into their penultimate meet of the season, when they head to Mt. Holyoke to face the Lyons. It will be the third time they have competed against Mt. Holyoke, having faced MHC at the Seven Sisters Championship and the Mt. Holyoke Invitational.
