Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Alex Phile had a hat trick and an assist to lead No. 7 Amherst College to an 8-1 win over Smith College on Thursday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action.  The Lord Jeffs improve to 10-2, while Smith falls to 4-10.
Amherst opened the scoring three minutes into the game when Phile got her first goal on an unassisted marker.  Smith quickly responded, getting on level terms less than 90 seconds later.
Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth)' pass through the box found the stick of
Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select), and the senior slammed it home for her third goal of the season.
The Lord Jeffs went in front for good on Krista Zvitsay's unassisted goal, and Phile completed her hat trick with goals at the 19th and 27th minutes for a 5-1 lead.  Zsitvay added her second of the game to complete the first half scoring for the Lord Jeffs, who took a 5-1 lead into the break.
Amherst added three more goals in the second half, with Carly Dudzik scoring twice, and Madeline Tank completed the scoring with 10 minutes remaining.
Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) finished with 15 saves, her seventh game with at least that many this season.  She now has 174 on the season, which is 56 shy of Smith's single season record of 230, which was set by Sydney Siegel in 2001.  To break the record, she would need an average of 19 saves per game over Smith's final three games.
Rachel Tannenbaum played the first 59:09 and made one save for Amherst, while Sarah Wise played the final 10:51, and also made one save.
Smith will return to NEWMAC play with a vital trip to Wheaton College on Saturday, October 22 at 2 p.m.  Amherst will play host to Wesleyan College at noon on October 22.
