Field Hockey Suffers Road Loss to Wheaton

Box Score NORTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team fell on the road to Wheaton College by a 4-2 count on Saturday afternoon.  Smith falls to 4-11 overall, with a 1-7 record in the NEWMAC.  Wheaton improves to 8-8, and 3-4 in the NEWMAC.

Jenna Rocha opened the scoring with her seventh goal of the season at 9:17. Off a penalty corner, junior Gillian Mann took a shot that was kicked out by sophomore goalkeeper Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) and Rocha fired in the rebound.

Smith answered quickly to tie the game at one when sophomore Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) potted her 16th goal of the season off a pass from senior Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) at 10:27. The score remained tied at the half with Wheaton holding a 17-4 edge in shots and an 11-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Rocha's second marker of the afternoon eight minutes into the second half put the Lyons in front for good, 2-1. Sophomore Emily Chick picked up the first of her two assists on the afternoon when she fed Rocha for eighth goal of 2011 at 43:42. Emily Asack followed with goals at 47:53 and 66:40 to stretch the Lyons lead to 4-1. The second Asack marker was assisted by Chick.

Hopkins pulled Smith back within two with her fourth goal of the season with 1:49 left in the contest when her shot from the right snuck under Wheaton goalie Ellie Massengill, but Smith could not find two more goals.

The Pioneers were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.  Lawson made 13 saves for Smith, and is now 44 shy of setting a new single season record for saves.

Wheaton travels to Worcester for their matchup with Clark at on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Pioneers play at Keene State Thursday at 6 p.m.
