Game Preview: Field Hockey vs. WPI

October 29, 2011

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The season comes to an end for the Smith College field hockey team when the Pioneers (4-12, 1-7 NEWMAC) host Worcester Polytechnic Institute (10-6, 3-4 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon.  The game is the final home contest for seniors Ashleigh King (Enfield, N.H./Mascoma), Sora Harris-Vincent (Plainfield, Vt./U-32), and Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) (above, L-R).

Last Meeting: WPI earned their only conference win of the season with a 5-0 victory in Worcester on October 30, 2010.

Last Smith Win: Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) netted a hat trick as Smith routed the Engineers 8-3 on October 21, 2008.  It was the last league game Smith would win for nearly three years, until a 4-3 overtime win over Clark this fall.

Smith Overview: Smith lost to Keene State 5-1 in snowy conditions on Thursday night.  The Pioneers gave up four goals in the first 10 minutes of the game before Hopkins got them on the board with her fifth goal of the season.

WPI Overview: At 3-4 in the league, WPI can clinch a playoff berth with a win, as the Engineers hold the head-to-head tiebreakers with Babson, Wheaton, and Wellesley.  WPI has won two straight games, including a 2-1 win over Wellesley that kept them in the playoff hunt.

Smith Player to Watch: The three seniors will want to go out on a high and spoil WPI's playoff ambitions.

WPI Player to Watch: Libbi Richardson leads the team with six goals, including five of the game winning variety.

Did you know?  The last time Smith won more than one league game in a single season was in 2008, with wins over WPI (see above) and a double-overtime win over MIT.
