September 24, 2011

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—The Smith College field hockey team had another strong outing from sophomore goalie Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard), who made 19 saves as the Pioneers fell on the road to Babson College by a 5-0 score on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.  It was the fifth consecutive game on road for Smith.

Despite the Beavers decided possession advantage, and a 33-1 margin in shots, the Pioneers stayed close for most of the afternoon due in part of the play of Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard). The sophomore keeper made 19 saves and was terrific in thwarting the Babson attack for much of the afternoon. Lawson now has 66 saves in her last three games.  Jess Pashos made one save to earn her second shutout of the season and the eighth of her career.

Lockwood opened the scoring just over 20 minutes into the game when she collected a pass from Steigerwald and hit a hard shot diving to her right that beat Lawson to her left for a 1-0 advantage. Malone tallied her first goal of the day just before halftime on a feed from Lockwood after a scramble in front of the net to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Lockwood added her second goal of the day at the 53:04 mark, scoring off a feed from Steigerwald for the second time on the day, and pusing the lead to 3-0. Steigerwald slide a long pass inside the arc to Lockwood, who was able to turn to her right and blast a shot inside the right post, beating Lawson. Malone gave Babson a 4-0 advantage at the 68:12 mark when she put away a loose ball in front of the cage, and Lockwood capped the scoring with her 13th goal of the season just 46 seconds later for the final margin.

Smith returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when they welcome Simmons College to Northampton for a 4:30pm match. Babson will travel north for a non-conference matchup with Bates College in Lewiston, Maine tomorrow afternoon at 1:00pm.
