Stein, Sealed, Delivered: Smith Routs Simmons

September 28, 2011

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Some home cooking proved to be just the tonic needed for the Smith College field hockey team, as the Pioneers snapped a four game losing skid with a 4-0 win over Simmons College in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.

Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) had a goal and an assist on her return to the lineup as the Pioneers up their record to 2-6, while Simmons lost their third straight game, and falls to 5-6.

Smith showed what kind of force they could be when fully healthy - in addition to Stein's return, the game also marked the return of Grace Maliska (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock), and Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) was playing just her third game of the year.  All three scored a goal for Smith, who got the scoring started at the 4:03 mark.  Stein fired in a shot from the top of the circle, and Maliska was on hand to deflect it past Simmons' goalie Renna Smith.  It was her third goal of the season, and her third in as many games played this year.

Stein got her seventh of the year with an unassisted tally with 18:52 on the board, and Hopkins scored her first goal of the season three minutes later when she cleaned up a scrum in front of the cage to beat Renna Smith high.  Hopkins and Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) had chanced to increase the lead off a penalty corner, but Smith took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Pioneers completed the scoring 48 seconds into the second half.  Smith was awarded a penalty stroke, and Sophie Demuynck (Mt. Holly, N.J./Moorestown Friends) stepped up to beat Smith for her first collegiate goal and a 4-0 Pioneers lead.  Smith outshot the Sharks 15-14, while the Sharks held the advantage in penalty corners, 11-10.

Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) made nine saves for Smith, while Renna Smith made five for the Sharks. It was the first career shutout for Lawson. Smith will host MIT on Saturday, October 1 at 1 p.m. in a return to NEWMAC play, while Simmons will be at New England College on October 1 at 5 p.m.
