Game Preview: Field Hockey vs. Vassar

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team will face off against Vassar College in the opening round of the Bettey Richey Field Hockey Tournament.  The other teams participating are Manhattanville College and Bay Path College.  Here's everything you need to know about the teams Smith could face this weekend.

Last Meeting (Vassar):  September 12, 2010.  The Brewers beat Smith 4-2 in the championship game of this same tournament.  Goals from Dari Goulden (Rutledge, Pa./Strath Haven) and Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) were not enough as Vassar opened up a 3-1 lead in the first 22 minutes of the game.

Last Smith Win: September 16, 2006.  Smith 1, Vassar 0 (OT).  In the first round of the Seven Sisters championship at Swarthmore, Smith beat Vassar in overtime. 

Note: The winners of the opening matches of the tournament will meet for the championship match on Saturday, while the losers of the opening matches will also meet for the consolation game.


Last Meeting (Manhattanville): This would be the first meeting between the Pioneers and the Valiants.

Last Meeting (Bay Path): This would be the first meeting between the Pioneers and Wildcats.

Smith Overview: Smith will be looking for their first win of the season, after falling to Nichols College 8-2 in their first game of the year on September 7.  Grace Maliska (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock) and Sydney Burns (Woodbury, N.J./George School (Pa.)) scored their first collegiate goals for Smith, while Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) made eight saves.

Vassar Overview: The Brewers hold a record of 1-1 coming into the tournament.  After dropping a 3-1 decision to Hartwick College in their opener, Vassar posted a 4-3 win over Keystone College. With the game tied 2-2 at halftime, Vassar netted twice in the second half for the win. 

Manhattanville Overview:  The Valiants are 1-0, thanks to a 4-0 win over Mercy College on September 1. The Valiants scored three times in 15 minutes in the second half to break open a 1-0 game.

Bay Path Overview: The Wildcats are 0-1, having fallen to SUNY-Brockport 8-0 in their lone game of the season. 

Smith Player To Watch:  Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer).  Coming off the bench against Nichols, Stein was a menace around the cage, diving for several loose balls and setting up Sydney Burns (Woodbury, N.J./George School (Pa.))' goal.

Vassar Player To Watch: Maura McCarthy.  A senior midfielder, McCarthy leads the team with three goals, and has placed 71% of her shots on the cage so far this season.

Manhattanville Player To Watch: Megan Greene.  A sophomore, Greene scored twice in the 4-0 win over Mercy College.

Bay Path Player To Watch: Samantha Berrios.  A senior, Berrios made 11 saves in the loss to SUNY-Brockport.

Did you know?
Betty Richey was a former coach and physical education teacher at Vassar College, who played for the United States women's lacrosse and field hockey team.  She also was a founder of the women's individual national tournament for squash.
