Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team had its two game winning streak ended with a 6-3 defeat at Western New England University in a non-conference game on Thursday evening. Smith's record drops to 6-6, while Western New England improves to 5-9.
The Golden Bears were ahead inside two minutes when Caitlin Hunter scored her eighth goal of the season, taking a pass from Chelsea Hayes and shooting past Smith goalie
Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) from eight yards out. Alyssa Chamberlain made it 2-0 in the seventh minute, and Brook Kumnick and Chamberlain's second gave Western New England a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Shelby Van Huysen's fifth goal of the year extende the Golden Bears' lead to 5-0 four minutes into the second period.
Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) broke up the shutout with an unassisted effort two minutes later. Foster's second goal of the game restored a five goal margin for Western New England, but
Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) answered for the Pioneers with her second tally of the campaign with 14 minutes left in the contest. Stein added her second of the game and 20th of the season in the 58th minute to make it a 6-3 contest, but Smith would not get closer.
Demick made nine saves in net for Smith, while Western New England keeper Kaitlyn Hall made 12 stops for the Golden Bears. Smith outshot Western New England 23-15, and held a 15-4 edge in penalty corners.
Smith will return to NEWMAC play this Saturday, hosting league-leading Babson College in a 1 p.m. contest. Western New England will host the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game starting at 6 p.m.
