Game Preview: Field Hockey vs. Worcester Polytechnic Institute

October 16, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team (6-7, 1-4 NEWMAC) will embark on their penultimate home game of the year when they play host to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (5-8, 2-4 NEWMAC) on Tuesday afternoon.

Last Meeting: WPI secured a 4-2 win over Smith on October 29, 2011.  WPI led 4-1 with 8:31 remaining in the contest, but torrential and sudden snow forced the remainder of the game to be postponed.  When the game resumed two days later, the Pioneers scored once for the final score.

Last Smith Win: Phoebe Hopkins netted a hat trick as Smith routed the Engineers 8-3 on October 21, 2008.  It was the last league game Smith would win for nearly three years, until a 4-3 overtime win over Clark last fall.

Smith Overview:  The Pioneers suffered a 7-0 defeat to Babson College in their most recent game.  Trailing 2-0 at halftime, Smith dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half, but could not find a way past Babson goalie Kayla Florence.

WPI Overview:  The Engineers have lost five of six, and have been shutout in three of those five defeats.  The lone win in that span was a 1-0 win over Mount Holyoke, where WPI won despite being outshot 19-8.

Smith Player to Watch:  Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) has started the last four games in net for Smith, and the Pioneers are 2-2 in that span.  Demick has 21 saves and a 3.99 GAA during that period.

WPI Player to Watch:  Liz Dufesne has started every game in goal, posting a 1.94 GAA and a .767 save percentage.

Did you know? Smith has taken nearly three times as many penalty corners as their opponents, 172-61.
