Game Preview: Field Hockey vs. No. 15 Amherst

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team (7-7) takes a break from the NEWMAC playoff race when they make the short trip to Amherst College to take on the No. 15 Jeffs (7-4) on Wednesday evening.


Last Meeting: Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) tied the game with her third goal of the year at the 4:35 mark, but the Jeffs would not let Smith score again in an 8-1 win on October 20, 2011.

Last Smith Win: Smith last defeated Amherst on October 25, 1994, scoring a 3-2 overtime win.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers are back in action after a thrilling 2-1 win over WPI on Tuesday night.  Down 1-0 after just 55 seconds of play, Smith tied the game up on Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset)' eighth goal of the season early in the second half.  DeJesus wasn't done, scoring the winner with 40 seconds left on the clock for a critical win that keeps the Pioneers in the thick of the NEWMAC playoff race

Amherst Overview: The Jeffs check in at No. 15 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll, moving up one place from last week.  A team that advanced to the national quarterfinals a year ago, the Jeffs 2-4 after winning their first five games of the year.  Three of those four losses have come in overtime.

Smith Player to Watch: Sara Mercier (Portland, Maine/McAuley) made her first appearance in over a month against WPI, helping to set up the tying goal for the Pioneers.

Amherst Player to Watch: Katie McMahon has a team leading 10 goals and seven assists, for a team high 27 points.
