Smith Field Hockey Thumps Daniel Webster

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) moved into second place in the career scoring list in Smith College history, notching two goals and four assists as the Pioneers' field hockey team cruised past Daniel Webster College, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

Stein now has 18 goals and 13 assists this year, for career totals of 43 goals and 24 assists, and 110 points.  She moves past Jessica Jones '94, who played from 1990-93 and finished with 107 points.  Smith Hall of Fame Inductee Paola Prins '86 is Smith's all-time leading scorer, ending her career with 187 points. 

Smith is now 5-5, while the Eagles, coached by former Pioneer Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select), drop to 0-7.  Smith outshot Daniel Webster 24-0, and held a 22-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Emma Camilleri (Florence, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) opened the scoring just 3:41 into the contest, firing home from the edge of a circle for her first career goal.  Stein doubled the advantage less than three minutes later when she turned home a Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) pass. 

Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) made it 3-0 mark when she redirected Stein's pass, and Stein got her second of the game just before halftime.

Two more goal scoring accounts were opened for Smith in second half.  Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) slammed in the rebound of Stein's shot in the 51st minute, and Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) got her first career goal five minutes later.  Maliska capped the scoring with her second of game with less than five minutes remaining.

Melanson finished with 12 saves in the cage for Daniel Webster, while Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) made her first career start for Smith, and was not called upon to make a save.

Smith will be back in NEWMAC action on Saturday, October 6, traveling to Wheaton College for a 1 p.m. tilt.  Daniel Webster will host Bay Path College on October 6 at 11 a.m.
