Game Preview: Swimming & Diving At Westfield State

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College swimming & diving team hits the road again when the Pioneers travel to Westfield State University for a dual meet that begins at 1 p.m. 


Last Year:  Mackenzie Bradley (Sherwood, Ore./Sherwood) won three events, while Alyssa Pascuzzo (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) and Alexandra Page (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) each won two as the Pioneers slipped past the Owls 160-126.  Smith's 'A' team in the 200 medley made up of Emily Clark, Ariel Orr, Pascuzzo, and Lauren Kauffman won the race in 2:02.25, edging out Westfield State's 'A' by .26 seconds.  Kauffman completed the anchor leg in a blistering 27.20 seconds to give Smith the win.  Bradley got the first of three wins in the 1,000 yard freestyle, touching the wall in 11:15.90, and added to that a win in the 200 yard fly in 2:21.02, and rounded out the day with a win the 500 yard freestyle in 5:31.60. Pascuzzo captured the 200 yard freestyle in 2:05.45, followed by classmate Paige Christie in 2:08.99.   Pascuzzo also won the 100 yard fly with a time of 1:03.90, with Rebecca Rosen in second place in 1:09.65.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers posted their first dual meet win of the year with a 133-101 win over Elms on Nov. 13.  The Pioneers won nine events, and Smith claimed the top three places in seven separate events. Mackenzie Bradley picked up wins in the 400 meter freestyle, as well as the 200 IM, and Pascuzzo captured a win in the 200 free, touching the wall in 2:21.80, just in front of Bradley in second with a time of 2:23.86.  Pascuzzo also led a sweep of the 100 fly, in 1:12.28, in front of teammates Kelsey Swesen (1:20.85) and Sabine Milger (1:22.52).

Westfield State Overview: The Owls have lost both their dual meets thus far this season, with losses to Simmons (152-139) and Mount Holyoke (165-121).  Most recently, Westfield State took part in the non-scoring UMass-Dartmouth Invitational, led by Amanda Labriola finished second in the 50 backstroke and third in the 100 backstroke, while Kirsten LaMotte was second in the 50 breaststroke and fourth in the 100 breastroke.

Did you know?  Smith and Westfield boast two of the longest tenured coaches in Western Massachusetts.  Smith's Kim Bierwert has been directly the Pioneers since 1977, while Westfield State's Dave Laing has been the Owls' boss since 1982.
