September 18, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team (2-3) returns home for a non-conference matchup against Westfield State University (3-1) on Tuesday afternoon.

Last Meeting: Westfield State scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half for a 3-1 win over Smith on September 20, 2011.  Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) was on the scoresheet for the Pioneers, while Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) made 23 saves.

Last Smith Win: The Pioneers rallied from a 3-1 deficit to stun the Owls in a 4-3 overtime thriller on September 22, 2010.  Phoebe Hopkins opened the scoring three minutes into the game, but the Owls struck back, scoring twice before halftime and once more after the break to open up a 3-1 advantage.  Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) brought Smith within 3-2 with a goal at the 48:45 mark, and Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) poked home Hopkins' penalty corner with 17 minutes to go to force the extra period.  Overtime had barely begun when Stein popped up with the winner, scoring off a Dari Goulden (Rutledge, Pa./Strath Haven) pass 59 seconds into the extra frame.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers opened conference play with a tough 9-1 loss to Mount Holyoke College on Saturday.  Dari Goulden (Rutledge, Pa./Strath Haven) got the only goal of the game for Smith, while Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) and Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) each played a half in goal.

Westfield State Overview: The Owls have won two straight, including a 4-1 Little East Conference win over Eastern Connecticut State on September 15.  It was the first road game of the season for Westfield State, whose only loss is to UMass-Dartmouth.

Smith Player to Watch: Goulden spent all of 2011 studying abroad, and has returned seamlessly, with a goal and two assists thus far.

Westfield State Player to Watch: Lauren Tavares has a goal in each of the Owls' last two games.
