Smith Edges Out Simmons, 4-3

September 26, 2012

Box Score BOSTON, Mass.--Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) scored the game winning goal with less than 10 minutes to play as the Smith College field hockey team came away with a 4-3 non-conference win over Simmons College on Wednesday night. It was her 16th goal of the season.

Stein has now scored the winner in every single Smith victory this season; the Pioneers improve to 4-4 overall, matching their win total from the 2011 season.  Simmons falls to 2-8.

Smith dominated from the early going, earning five penalty corners in the first 12 minutes and pepper Simmons' goalie Carolyn Baremore with shots.  Baremore kept Smith at bay until the 18th minute, when Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) slipped in a pass from twin sister Kristen Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) for her second goal of the season.

Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) made it 2-0 just three minutes later, as Stein fed her for her fifth goal of the year.  Kelly Williamson got Simmons on the board at the 25:12 mark, but Grace Maliska (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock) restored Smith's two goal advantage 19 seconds before halftime off an assist from Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson).

Despite being outshot in the second half by a 14-5 margin, the Sharks rallied to tie the score.  Courtney St. Pierre scored less than two minutes into the second half, and Gabrielle LaPerriere leveled matters with 42:44 on the clock.

Smith went all out in search of a winning goal, as Simmons' substitute keeper Renna Smith turned away shots from Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset), Sophie Demuynck (Mt. Holly, N.J./Moorestown Friends), and Casey Rau (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), but could not hold Smith off.  Immediately following a penalty corner by Demuynck, Stein slammed in the winner with 8:56 remaining in the game. It was the third straight game Stein has notched at least one goal and one assist.

Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) made five saves while playing the first 44:06 in net for Smith.  Abbey Fleming (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) was in cage for the final 25:54 and made three saves to pick up the win.

Smith will return to NEWMAC play with a trip to Wellesley College on Saturday, September 29 at noon.
