Kristen Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) scored her fourth goal in two games as the Smith College field hockey team lost to Manhattanville College 3-1 in the opening round of the Betty Richey Tournament, hosted by Vassar College, on Friday evening. The Pioneers will play either Bay Path College or Vassar College in tomorrow's consolation game.
Smith falls to 0-2 with the loss, while Manhattanville ups their record to 2-0.
All the goals came in the second half. The Valiants scored first when Rylee McGuire tipped in a shot from Amanda DeChent past Smith goalie
Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) with seven minutes played in the second half. Smith answered shortly, as Estes, who notched her first career hat trick against Nichols, fired home the rebound of
Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset)' shot at the 49:04 mark to level the scores.
DeChent put Manhattanville back in front for good four minutes later, and her second goal of the game at the 59:25 mark gave the Valiants a two goal advantage.
Both goalies stood on their heads to keep the game scoreless in the first half - Lawson made six saves in the stanza, while counterpart Amy Hilton made four. Lawson was particularly impressive, denying DeChent on back-to-back efforts in a three minute span, then stymying Kayla Meehan two minutes later.
Lawson finished with 10 saves in total, while Hilton finished with five. As mentioned, Smith will play the loser of the second game between Bay Path and Vassar, scheduled for 11:30 am.
