Field Hockey Bounces Simmons, 3-1

October 01, 2013

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) scored her 20th goal of the season and Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) netted the game winning goal just before halftime as the Smith College field hockey team won their eighth straight game with a 3-1 victory over Simmons College on Tuesday afternoon.

Smith is now 8-0, while Simmons falls to 6-5.  The Pioneers have won at least eight games for the first time since 1998.

Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) opened the scoring off a pass from Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) following a corner less than 10 minutes into the game.  It was Meagher's sixth goal of the season, after scoring just once in her first two years.

The Sharks tied the score in the 20th minute. After a Simmons penalty corner, Amy Wilson was on hand to poke home her first goal of the year past Smith 'keeper Maddi Wyda (Baltimore, Md./The Park School).

The Pioneers, who outshot Simmons 17-4, got back in front for good with 5:32 left in the first half.  Odhiambo, who had just come on as a sub, beat Simmons goalie Renna Smith for her fourth of the year and the eventual game winner.

The Sharks came out firing after halftime, as Seneca Martensson tested Wyda with a shot from distance, but Smith held firm, and salted away the win with Stein's goal in the 56th minute.  With her back to the cage, Stein spun and beat Renna Smith for a 3-1 lead.

Smith will return to conference play by hosting No. 16 Wellesley College on Saturday at noon.  Simmons will travel to Maine-Farmington on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
