Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) scored her 20th goal of the season and
Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) netted the game winning goal just before halftime as the Smith College field hockey team won their eighth straight game with a 3-1 victory over Simmons College on Tuesday afternoon.
Smith is now 8-0, while Simmons falls to 6-5. Â The Pioneers have won at least eight games for the first time since 1998.
Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) opened the scoring off a pass from
Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) following a corner less than 10 minutes into the game. Â It was Meagher's sixth goal of the season, after scoring just once in her first two years.
The Sharks tied the score in the 20th minute. After a Simmons penalty corner, Amy Wilson was on hand to poke home her first goal of the year past Smith 'keeper
Maddi Wyda (Baltimore, Md./The Park School). Â
The Pioneers, who outshot Simmons 17-4, got back in front for good with 5:32 left in the first half. Â Odhiambo, who had just come on as a sub, beat Simmons goalie Renna Smith for her fourth of the year and the eventual game winner.
The Sharks came out firing after halftime, as Seneca Martensson tested Wyda with a shot from distance, but Smith held firm, and salted away the win with Stein's goal in the 56th minute. Â With her back to the cage, Stein spun and beat Renna Smith for a 3-1 lead.
Smith will return to conference play by hosting No. 16 Wellesley College on Saturday at noon. Â Simmons will travel to Maine-Farmington on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
