NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team (11-7) heads to the postseason for the first time since 2008 when the No. 6 seed Pioneers head to No. 3 seed MIT (13-4) on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for seniors, and $1 for students. Children under 12 are admitted free.
Regular Season Meeting: MIT posted a 3-1 win over Smith on October 19, 2013.
The Series: Smith leads 15-13. These two teams have met twice in the postseason, in 1990 and 1998, with Smith won both those matchups. In 1998, No. 6 seeded Smith upset No. 2 MIT to advance the NEWMAC finals.
Fast Facts: The Engineers had lost three of four before a 4-2 win over Babson in the regular season finale...MIT scored twice in the final 13 minutes to break open a tie game...this is the sixth straight trip to the NEWMAC tournament for MIT...The Engineers have also made the NCAA tournament the last two seasons...Smith came back from a 2-0 deficit for a 5-2 win against Clark to clinch the last playoff berth...
Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) had two goals and an assist, pushing her over 200 career points...she is just the 26th player in NCAA Division III history to reach that mark...
Kat Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) scored on a penalty stroke against the Cougars, the first penalty stroke for the Pioneers this year...Smith will be looking for their first NEWMAC tournament win since 2000, when the Pioneers upset Mount Holyoke 2-1.
Next Up: The winner will advance to the semi-finals of the NEWMAC tournament, facing Mount Holyoke at Wellesley College on Saturday.
