Field Hockey Knocked Out Of NEWMAC Tournament With 3-0 Loss To MIT

November 05, 2013

Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--Host MIT scored three first half goals en route to a 3-0 win over Smith College in the quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament on Tuesday evening.

MIT (14-4) scored 44 seconds apart to break the game open.  Molly Duffy got the first goal, sending in a pass from Elizabeth Dethy for her 17th of the season.  Soon after, Duffy doubled the MIT lead off a Caitlin Mackey pass.

The Engineers made it 3-0 in the 25th minute.  Duffy turned provider, setting up Maddy Wharton for a 3-0 lead.

MIT had outshot Smith 14-1 in the first half, but the Pioneers came out of the gates firing in the second half.  Smith won a penalty corner that led to an Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) shot, but Evie Kyritsis made the save.  Following another penalty corner, Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) had her effort blocked.

Maddi Wyda (Baltimore, Md./The Park School) made two of her nine saves to deny Caitlin Mackey and Krishna Jaitly midway through the second half.  Smith kept pushing, but Kyritsis kept them at bay, turning aside shots from Casey Rau (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Emma Camilleri (Florence, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) in the final minute of the game.  Kyritsis made four stops for MIT.

MIT advances to the semifinals, where they will face Mount Holyoke Colege this Saturday, in a game played at Wellesley.  Smith (11-8) will hope for a bid to the ECAC New England tournament to extend their season.
