Swimming & Diving Dunks Babson, Brandeis

November 09, 2013

WORCESTER, Mass.--The Smith College swimming and diving team earned its first two victories of the season at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday.  Smith defeated Babson College 198-97 and Brandeis University 221-59, while falling to host WPI 182-118.

Reigning NEWMAC Diver of the Week Cecelia Arrison (Weathersfield, Vt./Stevens (N.H.)) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, with a score of 251.50 on the 1-meter board and an NCAA qualifying mark of 274.05 on the 3-meter, nearly 40 points ahead of her nearest competitor.

In a close finish in the 1,000 freestyle, Smith took the top two places as Emily Lane (Centennial, Colo./Kent Denver School) touched the wall in 11:55.39, less than half a second in front of teammate Claire Dudek (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), in 11:55.85.  Smith also got victories from Olivia Bannon (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.02,  and in the 200 breaststroke, where a dominating performance saw her win in 2:32.86, just about eight seconds ahead of WPI's Nysa Casha.  Both wins represented season best times.

Bannon was joined by Alyssa Pascuzzo (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep), Grace Lee (Beaverton, Ore./Aloha), and Erika Schroeder (Houston, Texas/Memorial) on the 200 yard freestyle relay that finished second in 1:46.54, while Bannon, Pascuzzo, Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown), and Erika Schroeder (Houston, Texas/Memorial) turned in a third place finish 4:23.18. Dudek added a second place finish in the 500 free in 5:45.75, shaving 10 seconds off her seed time.

Smith will return to the pool on November 12, heading to Springfield College in a dual meet that begins at 7 p.m.
