Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) scored all four goals as the Smith College field hockey team extended their unbeaten start to the season with a 4-2 win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon. It was the NEWMAC opener for both teams.
Smith is now 6-0, and 1-0 in the NEWMAC, while WPI dips to 3-3, and 0-1 in NEWMAC play.
Stein had a hat-trick before halftime, as Smith ran out to a 3-0 lead at the break. The senior, who needs 20 points to become the Pioneers' all-time leading scorer, was on hand to poke home her first from close range following a corner in the 19th minute.
The advantage was doubled 10 minutes later, when
Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) fed Stein at the near post for a 2-0 lead, and Stein completed her hat-trick with less than four minutes to go before the break, sliding home a pass from
Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth).
Smith's 3-0 halftime lead was put to the test by the Engineers, who had managed just one first half shot. WPI got on the scoreboard less than a minute into the first half, as Nicole Holmes tipped in a pass from Shannon Rice at the 35:51 mark. Five minutes later, WPI had pulled within one, with Mary Lee Barboza rocketing a shot after a penalty corner.
Smith held their nerve, earning three penalty corners in a row following WPI's second goal, and cemented the game on a well executed corner.
Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) sent the corner in to
Casey Rau (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), who nudged the ball to Stein, who fired in a laser like shot for her 17th goal of the season.
The Pioneers held a 14-4 edge in shots and an 18-8 edge in penalty corners. Smith won its conference opener for the first time since 2007, and defeated WPI for the second straight year.
Smith will return to the field on September 28, traveling to Wheaton College for a 1 p.m. start. WPI heads to Worcester State on September 23 for a 7 p.m. tilt.
