Box Score NORTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team handed host Wheaton College a 6-0 loss in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers improved to 7-0 overall, with a 2-0 NEWMAC record. Smith has now won its first two conference games for the first time since 1998.
Wheaton falls to 3-7, and 0-2 against NEWMAC opposition.
The Pioneers were on the board in the first two minutes of the game.
Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) set up
Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) for her fifth goal of the season at the 1:32 mark. Smith quickly added to their lead, scoring three times in the next 10 minutes. Stein got her 18th goal of the year with an unassisted tally after she took a loose ball and beat Wheaton goalie Madison Wolters to the lower left.
Emma Camilleri (Florence, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) scored her first of the year when she popped home a loose ball in front, and
Casey Rau (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) made it 4-0 with a shot from the top of the circle.
Holding a 4-0 lead at halftime, Smith added to it early in the second half when
Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) found the back of the cage six minutes into the half. Stein rounded out the scoring with her second of the day with just over a minute to go.
Maddi Wyda (Baltimore, Md./The Park School) made her first career start in the cage for Smith, making seven saves for her first career shutout. Wolters and Ellie Massengill split time in goal for Wheaton and combined for seven saves.
Smith held an 18-10 advantage in shots on goal, and an 11-3 lead in penalty corners.
The Pioneers will return home for a non-conference game against Simmons College on October 1 at 4 p.m. Wheaton will host Elms College tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
