Game Preview: Field Hockey vs. Nichols

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The 2013 season kicks off for the Smith College field hockey team (0-0) when the Pioneers play host to Nichols College (0-1) on Tuesday afternoon.  The game begins at 4:30 pm, and will be broadcast live over the web.


Last Meeting:  Nichols pulled out a 7-6 win over Smith on September 4, 2012.  Kristen Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) scored three times, while Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) had two goals and two assists.

The Series: Nichols leads the all-time series, 5-4, including wins in the last four meetings.  Smith last beat the Bison on September 9, 2008, in a 5-4 OT win.

Fast Facts: Two of the nine meetings between these two teams have gone to overtime, and three have been decided by a single goal...the Bison fell to Thomas College 3-2 in their home opener on August 31...this is one of five meetings against NEWMAC opposition for Nichols, who will also play Mount Holyoke, Clark, MIT, and WPI at some point this season...Smith plays one other team from the Commonwealth Coast Conference, in Western New England...Most people know that Smith senior Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) is 61 points away from tying Paola Prins '86 as Smith's all-time leading scorer...classmate Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) is currently 15th all-time for points (16-11-43), and could move into the top 10 by the end of the season...

Next Up: Smith heads to the Betty Richey Invitational on Friday, September 6, for a 7 p.m. matchup with Bay Path College.  Nichols hosts Mount Holyoke on September 5 at 7 p.m.
