Field Hockey Stuns Vassar To Win Betty Richey Tournament

September 07, 2013

Box Score POUGKEEPSIE, N.Y.--Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) scored two goals, one with three seconds left in regulation, and one 45 seconds into overtime as the Smith College field hockey team shocked Vassar College with a 3-2 overtime win in the championship game of the Betty Richey tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers, who are 3-0 for the first time since 1993, beat Vassar for the first time since 2006, ending a four game losing skid to the Brewers.

Stein had a had in all three goals, getting Smith off to the perfect start when she set up Kristen Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) for the opening goal just 2:18 into the game.  Estes deflected Stein's pass past Vassar goalie Amreen Bhasin.

The Brewers hit back almost immediately, as Lauren Wiebe one-timed a pass from Bianca Zarella three minutes after Smith's goal.  Vassar then went ahead in the 19th minute, as Caroline Stanton knocked in an unassisted goal to give Vassar a 2-1 lead that they would take into halftime.

Smith fought back, earning a pair of corners early in the second half, but were continually stifled by Bhasin.  Meanwhile, Smith goalie Abbey Petronzio (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) kept Vassar at bay, making eight of her 10 saves in the second half.

The clock continued to tick, and Smith was down to the final three seconds before Stein came up with her ninth goal of the season to force overtime.   Overtime has always been Stein's time; she scored the winner in overtime as a first year against Westfield State, and repeated the feat as a sophomore against both Clark and Western New England.  On Saturday, she did it again, needing just 45 seconds to take a pass from Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth), and her shot rebounded off a defender's leg and past substitute 'keeper Maggie Brelis for the game winner.

Stein was named the tournament's MVP, while Abbey Petronzio (Beverly, Mass./Beverly), Emma Camilleri (Florence, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson), Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth), and Kat Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) were named to the All-Tournament team.

Smith will look to continue their winning streak when the Pioneers host Daniel Webster on September 12 at 4:30 pm.
