Swimming and Diving Rolls Past Elms in Dual Meet

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Smith College swimming and diving team earned an impressive 141-93 victory over Elms College Tuesday night. Competing in 14 events, the Pioneers recorded 10 first place performances. 
 
Smith commenced the meet with a first place performance in the 200 Meter Medley Relay. Junior Christine Hart (Rexford, N.Y./Niskayuna), senior Alyssa Pascuzzo (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep), sophomore Erika Schroeder (Houston, Texas/Memorial), and junior Meredith Millman (Syosset, N.Y./Jerich) collaborated for a time of 2.20.31, edging out the Elms "A" team, which finished with an overall time of 2.21.97.
 
Smith's early momentum continued as the Pioneers built a commanding lead with consecutive first place finishes in the 800 Meter Freestyle, 200 Meter Freestyle, 100 Meter Backstroke, 100 Meter Butterfly, 50 Meter Freestyle, 100 Meter Freestyle and 200 Meter Breaststroke.
 
Junior Laura Nunnelly (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) took first in the 800 Meter Freestyle with a time of 10:48.65, while Millman claimed first in the 200 Meter Freestyle with a finish of 2:30.35. Senior Paige Christie (N. Andover, Mass./Austin Prep) claimed the top spot in the 100 Meter Backstroke with a time of 1.14.96 – the fourth event of the meet – edging teammate Abby Onos (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) by roughly two-and-a-half seconds. Onos finished with an overall time of 1:17.34, while Hart placed third with a time of 1.17.50.
 
Pascuzzo touched the wall first in the 100 Meter Breaststroke, edging out her teammate, first-year Tess Ostoyich (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), by a little more than a second. First-year Abby Bergman (El Segundo, Calif./Vistamar) nabbed a first place finish in the 100 Meter Butterfly, while sophomore Erika Schroeder (Houston, Texas/Memorial) followed with a top finish in the 50 Meter Freestyle. Sophomore Carolyn Taylor (Dallas, Texas/Hockaday School) captured a first place finish in the 100 Meter Freestyle and Pascuzzo tallied her second individual win of the meet with a top finish in the 200 Meter Backstroke.
 
After the Blazers posted a win in the 200 Meter Breaststroke, the Pioneers earned a first place finish in their next event – the 400 Meter Freestyle – thanks to senior Emily Lane (Centennial, Colo./Kent Denver School), who registered a time of 5.25.03.
 
Smith returns to the pool on November 22 when they travel to Westfield State University at 1 p.m.
