Smith Field Hockey hosts third-ranked Middlebury

Junior goalie Nora Demick stops 13 shots in loss to Panthers

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Third-ranked Middlebury College struck for six first-half goals and went on to a 9-0 victory over the Smith College field hockey team Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers (3-0) fired off 20 shots in the first half and scored four times in the first 17 minutes to take a commanding lead.

Pioneer junior goalie Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) had another solid night in net for the Blue and Gold. She entered the contest averaging seven saves a match and bettered her average by making a season-best 13 saves against Middlebury, including 10 in the first half.

Aiding in Smith's defensive efforts was senior Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough), who made a pair of defensive stops.

Six different Panthers tallied markers in the match, led by sophomore Lauren Berestecky's hat-trick.

The Pioneers are back in action Saturday, Sept. 20 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play against Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
