Pioneers Fall in Double-Overtime Heartbreaker

September 20, 2014

Box Score

Worcester, MA --- Jena Mazzucco scored on a breakaway late in the second overtime to provide host WPI a dramatic 2-1 victory over Smith in the NEWMAC conference opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, WPI is now 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play while Smith dips to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in NEWMAC action.

Senior Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) got Smith on the board in the sixth minute of the contest when she knocked home a feed from Kat Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) following a penalty corner.

The Engineers tied the match at one some seven minutes later. The score remained tied thanks in part to the defensive efforts of junior netminder Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day), who stood tall and kept the Engineers at bay despite WPI outshooting Smith 15-9 during regulation.

The Pioneers offense came alive during the overtime periods, as Smith took 10 shots during the two extra frames. Unfortunately, Mazzucco slipped past the last line of defense with two minutes and 10 seconds remaining to seal the win for the home team.

Demick made five saves in goal for Smith. Junior Casey Rau (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) took five shots, two of which were on goal to lead the Pioneer attack.

Smith is back at it Tuesday, hosting nationally-ranked Williams College at 7pm.
