Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.— The Smith College field hockey team opened the 2014 season Friday with a 3-1 loss to the Manhattanville College Valiants in the opening round of the 26
th annual Betty Richey Tournament, hosted by Vassar College.
Smith falls to 0-1 with the loss, while Manhattanville ups their record to 1-3. The Pioneers will play either Thomas College or Vassar College in tomorrow's consolation game.
The Pioneers scored first when junior forward
Kat Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) scored a penalty stroke goal 12 minutes into the first half. The Valiants scored three straight unanswered goals,all three of which came in the second half, to seal the win.

Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) made three saves in net for Smith, while Manhattanville's Meghan Hughes turned away eight shots in goal for the Valiants.
Smith returns to action tomorrow at 12 p.m. to take on either Thomas or Vassar College.
