Box Score WESTFIELD, Mass. – Four different players scored for Smith College as the Pioneers posted a 4-0 win over Westfield State in non-conference field hockey
on Tuesday evening.
Smith improves to 7-6 on the season with the win, while the Owls record is leveled at 6-6.
Kat Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) opened the scoring for Smith with a penalty stroke in the 22
nd minute. The stroke was awarded after a Pioneers' offensive barrage that ended with a defensive save from the Owls' Delaney Gembis, but Gembis' save came off her foot while being the last line of defense to see the Pioneers' awarded the stroke.
Estes lifted a waist-high shot to the right post to score the goal.
The Pioneers padded the lead with
Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) tallying on a blast from the top of the circle off of a penalty corner feed from inserter
Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) in the 25
th minute.
Westfield's best scoring chance came late in first half when Meg Doherty stole the ball from a Smith defender inside the circle and dnapped off a quick shot that came off the pads of Cameo Titje.
Smith got a pair of second half goals in a fou-minute span.
Emily Biggs (Florence, MA/Northampton) scored off the remnants of a corner play, and
Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) scored a transition goal, redirecting a long centering pass from
Mariah Ollive (Milton, Vt./Milton) on the left flank.
Smith had a 24-8 advantage in total shots and a 8-4 edge in penalty corners. Westfield State junior goalie Megan Fountaine made 10 saves, while Smith's
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) stopped five shots before yielding to Norah Demick for the final six minutes of play. Demick did not need to record a save in her stint in goal.
Smith will host MIT on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. where the Pioneers will honor their four seniors. Westfield State will travel to Salem State for a Little East Conference game
on Saturday at
noon.
