Meet Preview: Smith vs. Westfield State

Last Meeting: Six different Pioneers were winners as Smith won 12 total events in a 172-115 victory at Westfield State on November 22, 2014. Claire Dudek (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was the winner in the 500 free (5:41.03) and the 1000 free (11:37.54), while Laura Nunnelly (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) claimed victory in the 200 IM (2:29.01). In diving, Anna Partridge (Seattle, Wash./Mercer Island) placed second in both the one and three-meter boards.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers won 11 events and posted a 142-98 dual meet triumph over Elms College Tuesday evening. The 200 yard medley team of Nunnelly, Leah VanHoeve (Annville, Ky./Homeschool), Desi Stoyanovich (Bulgaria), and Erin Walch (Alexandria, Ky./Academy of Math & Science) started off the meet with a win for the Pioneers in 2:06.33. That would set the tone as Smith would take first in the next nine events. Meredith Millman (Syosset, N.Y./Jerich) finished over eight seconds ahead of her opponent in the 200 free (2:13.03), while Carolyn Taylor (Dallas, Texas/Hockaday School) edged out a Blazer in the 100 back with a time of 1:10.07.

Westfield State Overview: The Owls are coming off a 163-119 loss to Mount Holyoke College last Saturday. Hayley McQuay (200 free - 2:14.01), Tia Pariseau (50 breast - 33.70), Monique Groux (1-meter dive) and Alex Frazier (200 IM - 2:33.41) each won their event. The 200 free relay team of Danielle Macdonald, Summer Walker, Groux and Frazier placed first in 2:02.79. Westfield's only win this season was against Western New England (148-102).

Did you know? Smith and Westfield boast two of the longest tenured coaches in Western Massachusetts. Smith's Kim Bierwert has been directing the Pioneers since 1977, while Westfield State's Dave Laing has been the Owls' boss since 1982.
