WORCESTER, Mass. – The Smith swimming and diving team competed in a series of dual meets at WPI Sunday afternoon, going 2-1 on the day. Smith defeated Babson College, 251-35 and Brandeis University, 170-121 before falling to the hosts from WPI, 202-98.
ResultsWPI won 11-of-16 events. Smith won four events, while Brandeis won one.
Freshman Desi Stoyanovich highlighted the Pioneers day as she placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:07.86 and the 400 IM in 4:54.52, seven seconds ahead of the runner-up. Stoyanovich also came in second in the 200-yard fly (2:20.29) and anchored the fifth place 200-yard freestyle relay team.
The Pioneers also received victories from sophomore
Elyse Stone (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) in the 1-meter dive (270.40) and senior
Anna Partridge (Seattle, Wash./Mercer Island) on the 3-meter board (261.05), while CeCe Arrison notched a second place finish in the 1-meter (262.55). Both Stone and Arrison achieved their second NCAA qualifying score of the season and have now qualified for the NCAAs.
Freshman
Tyra Wu (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) clocked in a season best time of 1:08.45 in the 100-yard back which was good for second place and had a strong performance in the 200-yard back.
Hannah Francis (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton Prep),
Leah VanHoeve (Annville, Ky./Homeschool) and
Michaela Stamm (Lexington, Mass./Cambridge School) all recorded season best times in 200-yard breast, while
Claire Dudek (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) finished fourth in the 1000-yard free and registered a season best time in the 500-yard free.
Smith returns to the pool on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a dual meet at conference-foe Springfield College.
