Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - Facing their second New England Small College Athletic Conference foe in as many games, the Smith College Field Hockey Team fell by a 1-0 final at Connecticut College in a physical contest on Wednesday.
The Camels lit the scoreboard in the fifth minute of play on a reverse sweep goal by Katlyn Paiva from the left of the penalty spot back across cage, and the goal stood up as the gamewinner despite nine Pioneer shots, seven in the second half as Smith pressed for an equalizer.
Only a brilliant defensive save by Jacqueline Murphy in the first half kept the Pioneers off of the scoreboard at the break.  On a penalty corner, a
Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) blast beat Connecticut College goalkeeper Ryley van der Velde.  At the back post, Murphy redirected the shot wide to preserve the clean sheet.
Murphy recorded a second defensive save after halftime, steering another Smith effort over the endline on a penalty corner.
Chaudoin led the Pioneers with three shots with
Emily Biggs (Florence, MA/Northampton),
Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School), and
Mariah Ollive (Milton, Vt./Milton) also testing van der Velde.
The Smith backline of
Raegan Stokes (Watertown, CT/Kent School), Chaudoin, and
Alex Larosee (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) held the Camels at bay in the second half in front of Smith goalkeeper
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), who recorded seven saves in her first start of the season.
The Pioneers open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they host WPI.  Play is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
