Box Score NORTHAMPTON, MA - The Smith College field hockey team used a goal in each half to shutout Simmons College Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 4-4 on the season and Simmons drops to 7-3.
The Sharks best chance of the day came at the 27:57 mark when they were given a penalty stroke. Amy Cronin's shot was placed at the bottom left corner but a diving save by
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) kept the game scoreless.
With under a minute left in the first half, the Pioneers were awarded a corner where
Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, CA/La Costa Canyon) took the feed from
Kat Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) found the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) gave the Pioneers an insurance goal just 2:10 into the second half when she dribbled down the endline and maneuvered around the Sharks' netminder for a 2-0 Smith advantage.
Tietje recorded four saves in the shutout, while her counterpart Brianna Rastello kept her team in the game, stopping 10 shots.
Smith held significant advantages in shots (16-6) and corners (10-5).
The Pioneers look to remain undefeated in conference play Saturday at 12:00 pm when they host Wellesley.
