Thirteen Saves Not Enough as Field Hockey Falls 3-0

September 04, 2015

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) recorded 13 saves including nine in the opening half of play, but the homestanding Vassar Brewers defeated the Smith College Field Hockey Team by a 3-0 final on Friday evening in the first game of the 27th Annual Betty Richey Tournament.

Vassar came out firing at the start, forcing a trio of Demick saves before the Pioneers earned their first penalty corner of the match in the 15th minute.  First-year Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) fired on target, only to be denied by the Brewers netminder Paige Amico.

Smith earned a second short corner less than one minute later, but sophomore Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy)'s was rejected by Amico.

Alyssa More tallied for Vassar in the 34th minute to send the Brewers into the break with the one goal advantage.

A brilliant diving save by Demick kept the deficit at a single goal early in the second half before Megan Caveny and Emma Bracken put the Brewers up by three with a pair of goals within four minutes.

Only a strong lunge from Amico presrved the shutout for Vassar as the netminder denied a quick counter-attack by Hamilton and Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School).

With the victory, Vassar improves to 2-0 and advances to the Betty Richey Championship game while Smith drops to 0-1 on the season ahead of Saturday's third-place match with Manhattanville.  The match against the Valiants is scheduled for 1PM.
