Lima's First Career Goal Propels Field Hockey to 1-0 Victory

September 05, 2015

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.  – Kathleen Lima (Cheshire, CT/Northfield Mount Hermon) scored her first collegiate goal in the 47th minute and the Pioneers defense held Manhattanville without a shot on goal as the Smith College Field Hockey Team defeated the Valiants 1-0 in the third-place game of the 27th Annual Betty Richey Tournament on Saturday.

Lima's marker came on a penalty corner as an initial shot from Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) was denied by Manhattanville goalkeeper Meghan Hughes.  The ball ricocheted across the open mouth of cage to Lima, who finished with the reverse in front of a Valiants defender.

Chaudoin nearly doubled the advantage for the Pioneers (1-1) just over 10 minutes later as she fired a stinging shot off the inside of the left post with the ball glancing just wide of the far sideboards.

Chaudoin, Raegan Stokes (Watertown, CT/Kent School), and Sophie Chase (Milton, Mass./Milton) anchored the Pioneer back line in front of senior Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day), who earned the shutout victory.  For their performances on Friday and Saturday, Chase and Demick were named to the Betty Richey All-Tournament team.

Smith outshot Manhattanville 13-6 and earned nine penalty corners to Manhattanville's six.

The Pioneers return to action on Thursday when they travel to Middlebury, ranked third in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association pre-season poll.  Play is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
