Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Edges MIT, 1-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A goal by Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) in the 46th minute was all Smith College needed as it held on to defeat MIT, 1-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

Records: MIT (9-3; 4-1 NEWMAC); Smith (8-6, 4-2 NEWMAC)

Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) tested the hosts' backline early in the game as she produced two shots, one of which was kicked away by Brewer. MIT slowly built some momentum as it fired off a trio of shots in a span of 15 seconds, all of which were stopped by Tietje.

Smith threatened to get on the board in the 18th minute courtesy of a strike by Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) but Brewer came up with the save. Despite the Engineers' controlling the action down the stretch, the game was scoreless at the intermission.

The hosts registered two penalty corners that resulted in two shots on goal during the first nine minutes of the second stanza. However, the Pioneers responded with Hamilton's goal that came with 24:33 on the clock. Dribbling the ball along the far side of the field, she unleashed a shot from just inside the arc that sailed to the top corner by the far post.

MIT continued to press, generating five penalty corners and four shots with two being turned away by Tietje. The Engineers nearly scored the equalizer in the 55th minute but sophomore Bailey Tregoning's (Frederick, Md.) shot glanced off the far post. The Cardinal and Gray's final chance to send the game into overtime occurred when it was awarded a penalty corner moments before time expired; however, Smith quickly thwarted any potential scoring opportunity.

MIT produced an 18-5 advantage in shots, with a 10-3 margin for shots on goal. In addition, the Engineers had a 10-0 difference in penalty corners.

In her first appearance in net, freshman Kate Brewer (Louisville, Ky.) made two saves for MIT. Smith's Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) turned away eight shots while Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) earned a pair of defensive saves.

Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 19 as it will visit nationally-ranked No. 9 Amherst College for a non-conference battle.
