NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Junior forward
Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) recorded her second career hat trick in Smith's 3-1 win over Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
Both teams wore pink warm up shirts as part of October's National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Pioneers improve to 9-7 on the season with a 5-2 record in conference play. With the loss, the Pride is now 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the NEWMAC.
Hamilton put the home team on the board just 11:32 into the contest when her shot snuck past the Pride keeper. That goal would stand as the only score of the first half as the teams went into the second stanza with Smith leading 1-0.
Coming out in the second half, the Williamstown native buried her second goal just three minutes into play on an assist from classmate Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook). Hamilton completed the hat trick in the 47th minute on another unassisted tally.
Freshman Belle Copponi recorded her fifth goal of the year for Springfield with five seconds to play in the game to deny Smith's attempt of a shutout.
The Pioneers held a 12-8 shot advantage over Springfield College, while the Pride held the edge in corners 7-5.
Junior goalkeeper
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made six saves and earned her ninth win of the year while freshman netminder Abbey Doherty made four stops in the loss.
Smith will face their final non-conference opponent of the season when the Pioneers host Keene State at 7:00 p.m.
