NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team secured its place in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 win over visiting Smith College at Christina C. Mirrione '00 Stadium.
With the win the Lyons improve to 13-7 on the season and 5-5 in NEWMAC action, while the Pioneers fall to 8-6-5 overall and 2-5-3 in conference play.
Wheaton wasted no time getting started with senior defender Sydney Ferrall scoring her first goal of the season in the third minute. A goal came after a corner kick by Aymara O'Brien-Pappalardo pinged around the box and eventually found the feet of Ferrell.
O'Brien-Pappalardo played a part in Wheaton's next goal, this time setting up junior Megan Healy. The Lyons first-year midfielder sent the ball to Healy who chipped Pioneer keeper Alanna Lynch (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) far post.
Logan Ahearn and Lily Scammon paired up for Wheaton's third goal of the game, which came in the 36thminute. Scammon threaded the ball through two Pioneer defenders, which allowed Ahearn to one touch the ball back across frame and into the left netting.
The Lyons added their final goal in the second half.
Smith challenged Wheaton down the stretch, firing off several shots in the final 20 minutes, but were unable to beat senior goalkeeper Sarah Caron. Caron, who picked up her first win of the season, ended the day with six saves. Lynch split time in goal with Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield), making one save in 45 minutes of work. Hall ended the contest with three saves.
With the loss, the Pioneers fail to qualify for the conference tournament.
