BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Bailey Tregoning had a goal and an assist as third-seeded MIT defeated second-seeded Smith, 3-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Tournament semifinal
on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
MIT (13-4) advances to
Sunday's NEWMAC title game to face top-seeded Babson, while Smith concludes its season at 10-9.
Junior Emily Penn and classmate Anna Neuman also scored for the Engineers, who got four saves from first-year goalkeeper Kate Brewer.
Junior
Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and sophomore Emimly Biggs each scored the Pioneers, while junior
Mariah Ollive (Milton, Vt./Milton) and first-year
Sammie Pavlov (Royersford, Pa./Westtown) both recorded an assist. Junior goalkeeper
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) turned away five shots in the loss.
MIT jumped on top just
5:12 into the contest when Penn converted a penalty stroke for her league-leading 20
th goal of the season. Tregoning followed with her marker just over
six minutes later to give the Engineers a 2-0 advantage at the
11:28 mark of the first half.
Smith got on the board when Biggs redirected an aerial shot by Pavlov in the 47
th minute, but MIT tacked on an insurance goal with
6:09 remaining as Neuman scored off a centering pass from Tregoning to make it 3-1.
The Pioneers maintained their pressure and cut their deficit back to 3-2 on Hamilton's 12
th tally of the year following a penalty corner with
4:45 left, but were unable to find a late equalizer.
The Engineers finished with a 16-12 edge in shots, while Smith had an 11-10 edge in penalty corners.
