Field Hockey Falls to MIT in NEWMAC Semifinals

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Bailey Tregoning had a goal and an assist as third-seeded MIT defeated second-seeded Smith, 3-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Tournament semifinal on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

MIT (13-4) advances to Sunday's NEWMAC title game to face top-seeded Babson, while Smith concludes its season at 10-9.

Junior Emily Penn and classmate Anna Neuman also scored for the Engineers, who got four saves from first-year goalkeeper Kate Brewer.

Junior Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and sophomore Emimly Biggs each scored the Pioneers, while junior Mariah Ollive (Milton, Vt./Milton) and first-year Sammie Pavlov (Royersford, Pa./Westtown) both recorded an assist. Junior goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) turned away five shots in the loss.

MIT jumped on top just 5:12 into the contest when Penn converted a penalty stroke for her league-leading 20th goal of the season. Tregoning followed with her marker just over six minutes later to give the Engineers a 2-0 advantage at the 11:28 mark of the first half.

Smith got on the board when Biggs redirected an aerial shot by Pavlov in the 47th minute, but MIT tacked on an insurance goal with 6:09 remaining as Neuman scored off a centering pass from Tregoning to make it 3-1.

The Pioneers maintained their pressure and cut their deficit back to 3-2 on Hamilton's 12th tally of the year following a penalty corner with 4:45 left, but were unable to find a late equalizer.

The Engineers finished with a 16-12 edge in shots, while Smith had an 11-10 edge in penalty corners.
