Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Senior forward
Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) netted the game-winner in overtime for Smith College in their 2-1 season opening win over Manhattanville Friday afternoon at the Betty Richey Tournament hosted by Vassar College.
The Pioneers (1-0) will now face the winner of Vassar College and SUNY Geneseo on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for first place in the annual tournament.Â
Junior forward
Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) put Smith on the board in the 21st minute when she deflected a shot from the top of the circle from the stick of sophomore
Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon).
The Valiants were able to extend the game beyond 70 minutes thanks to a goal from junior Melissa Stys in the 60th minute to level the score at one goal apiece. Stys knocked in a rebounded shot from freshman Ammerah Thomas for her first tally of the season and forced an extra period of play.
In the overtime period, Manhattanville had a great opportunity, but Thomas' blast traveled wide left and proved to be the final opportunity that the Valiants would have. Odhiambo deflected home the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute of action on a shot attempt from
Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook) to send the Pioneers into the championship game.
Smith goalkeeper
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made two saves on the day, while Meghan Hughes stopped five for Manhattanville in the loss. The Pioneers outshot their opponent 18-10.Â
