BOSTON, Mass. – The Smith College field hockey team saw three different players score in a 3-0 victory over host Simmons College this evening at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Pioneers improve to 5-4 on the season, while the Sharks fall to 5-4.
Â
Smith scored twice in the first half, before adding an insurance marker in the second. The Pioneers controlled the match for most of the night, outshooting Simmons, 19-3, while holding a 7-0 advantage on penalty corners.
Â
Smith sophomore back
Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) opened the scoring just over 21 minutes into the match, when she ripped a shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner. Junior forward
Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) took the penalty corner for the Pioneers passing off to sophomore forward
Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) who nudged it along to Chaudoin for the scoring strike.
Â
First year forward
Devon Datsis (York, Maine/York) made it a two goal lead for the Pioneers 91 seconds before the end of the first half when she knocked in her first collegiate goal in the midst of a scrum in front of the Sharks' cage.
Â
The Pioneers scoring was rounded out by first year back
Sammie Pavlov (Royersford, Pa./Westtown), who also notched her first collegiate goal on a penalty stroke just over five minutes into the second half. That would be all the scoring for both teams for the remaining 30 minutes of the match.
Â
Simmons had its best scoring chance midway through the first half with a shot by sophomore midfielder
Ana Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) just outside the circle, which rebounded out to junior forward Sammy Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.), who was denied with a defensive save by Smith sophomore back
Raegan Stokes (Watertown, Conn./Kent School).
Â
Senior forward Mary Neidhardt (Middlefield, Conn.) had a chance late in the match looking to get the Sharks on the board, but was denied by the Pioneers keeper on the fast break.
Â
Junior goalie
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) earned the shutout with two saves for the Pioneers, increasing her career shutout total to five, while extending her scoreless streak to 156:44 minutes without a goal. Senior goalie Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) made 12 stops on a night for Simmons.
Â
The Sharks return to action on
Saturday, October 1 when they host conference foe Lasell College at Daly Field at
11:00am, while the Pioneers are on the road for a match with Wellesley College on the same day at
noon.Â
