Pioneers Fall to Wellesley on Senior Day, 187-112

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College swimming and diving team returned to the pool Saturday, facing off against Seven Sisters and NEWMAC rival Wellesley College. The Blue posted a score of 187-112 to capture the win, moving to 4-3. The Pioneers (3-4) honored their five seniors (Eliza Cummings (Denver, Colo./Denver Center for Int'l Studies), Samantha Font (Belleair, Fla. /Admiral Farragut Academy), Abby Onos (South Portland, Maine/South Portland), Michaela, Stamm andCarolyn Taylor (Dallas, Tex.)) prior to the meet.

RESULTS

SWIMMING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Smith opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome of Kate Niemiec (South Windsor, Conn. /South Windsor), Jenny Huo (Bellevue, Wash. /Bellevue), Desi Stoyanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and Abby Onos (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) combined for a time of 1:59.36
  • Eliza Cummings (Denver, Colo./Denver Center for Int'l Studies) dominated her competitors in the 1000 free, touching the wall in 11:24.03, over 11 seconds ahead of the next finisher and placed third in the 200 free (2:06.87).
  • Niemiec swam to first in the 100-yard back with a time of 1:03.26, while in the 100-yard breastroke, Stamm was second in 1:17.51.
  • Huo powered her way to third in the 50-yard free with a time of 27:29, while Stamm was second in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall with a time of 2:48.03.
  • Cummings was third in the 500-free with a time of 5:35.09, while Stoyanova placed second in the 100-fly with a time of 1:04.36.
  • In the final event of the day, the 400-yard relay team of Onos, Niemiec, Cumings and Haley Markos (Dover, N.H./Dover) touched the wall second in 3:48.94.

DIVING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Elly Stone (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) and Abigail Hanna (Averill Park, N.Y./Doane Stuart) each earned qualifying scores for the NCAA Diving Regionals.
  • Stone earned second place on the 1-meter with a score of 289.85 and third place on the 3-meter (286.00)
  • Hanna totaled 286.80 points on the 3-meter for a second place finish and 255.55 on the 1-meter which was good for third place.
