The Smith College soccer team concluded the 2017 season with a 1-0 loss to Clark University Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. Prior to the game, Smith honored their nine seniors for their commitment and dedication to the program:
Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield),
Camryn Biasin (Lee, Mass./Berkshire),
Emma Gubbins (Dennis, Mass./Nauset Regional),
Laurel Reed (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland),
Peyton Draper (Denton, Tx./Guyer),
Nora Cheney (Pueblo, Colo./Fountain Valley),
Jordan Isaacs (Weston, Conn./Weston),
Genevieve DiVito (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg Catholic), and Kenza Mdarhri-Alaoui.
The Cougars boost their record to 9-6-2 overall and 4-4-2 in conference play. Smith concludes the 2017 season with a 6-10-1 record and 2-8-0 conference mark.Â
Clark got on the board in the 39th minute on an own goal by the Smith defense.Â
The Pioneers dominated play for much of the second-half with 14 shots and seven corners.Â
Seniors
Jordan Isaacs (Weston, Conn./Weston) and Kenza Mdarhri-Alaoui each had opportunities late in the second-half to tie the game, but big plays by the Clark defense and goalkeeper preserved the shutout.
Julianna Christy was outstanding in net for Clark, registering 14 saves in the contest. Senior goalkeeper
Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) stopped four shots for the Pioneers.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: SMI 0, CLK 1; 38:44 - An error by the Smith defense allowed the ball to hit the post and trickle into the net for the Cougars.
GAME NOTES
- Smith held the advantage in shots 21-5 and corners 9-4.
- This marks the second-straight season the Pioneers have missed the playoffs.
- Senior goalkeeper Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) finishes her career as the program's all-time leader in starts (46) and is fourth all-time with 14 career shutouts.
