Field Hockey Drops 3-0 Decision to Wellesley in NEWMAC Quarterfinals

Smith 3, Wellesley 0
October 31, 2017
Northampton, Mass.
Records: Smith 9-10; Wellesley 8-11

Hannah Maisano's goal just 3:03 into the game proved to be all Wellesley would need as the Blue topped Smith College 3-0 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening.

The Blue improve to 8-11 overall and advance to the NEWMAC semifinals on Saturday, November 4, where the Blue will play second-seeded MIT at Babson. Smith ends the season with a 9-10 overall record.

Wellesley held an 18-13 advantage in shots over 70 minutes of play, while each team was awarded 11 penalty corners.

The Blue wasted little time getting on the board as sophomore forward Rachel Hwang's shot was saved by Smith goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), creating a long rebound that found the stick of Maisano who rifled a shot into an open net for the 1-0 lead.

Wellesley would control the pace of play for much of the first half, earning six corners and taking eight shots. With 1:28 remaining in the first half, the Blue capitalized on a corner as Mitzi Wiggin made the score 2-0. Danielle Brubaker inserted the corner attempt and the offense worked the ball around the cirle to Wiggin who took a direct shot from the left side.

Maisano added her second tally of the contest less than five minutes into the second period to put the visitors up 3-0. She took a shot from Wiggin and slipped it past Tietje's left side, giving the visitors a comfortable cushion.

Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, CA/La Costa Canyon) led the Pioneers with two shots on goal. Smith senior goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) turned away eight shots for the Pioneers. Maggie Connelly made five stops for the Blue in her second shutout of the season.

UP NEXT
Wellesley will now turn its attention to MIT. The tournament's No. 2 seed, the Engineers are ranked No. 12 in the nation in the latest NFHCA Coaches poll and boast a 14-2 overall record. MIT won the regular season meeting between the two schools, 1-0 on October 17 in Cambridge. Smith's season comes to an end with tonight's loss.
