Swimming and Diving Edged by Westfield State, 155-143

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Despite a number of solid performances, the Smith College swimming & diving team was unable to get past Westfield State University, falling by a 155-143 margin on Saturday afternoon at Dalton Pool. With the win, the Owls moved to 3-1 in dual meet action this season, while the Pioneers slip to 1-4 overall.

SWIMMING HIGHLIGHTS
  • The meet opened with a second and third place finish for the Pioneers in the 200-yard medley relay. The A team was composed of  by Maddy Meadows-McDonnell (Indianapolis, Ind. /North Central), Junko Taniguchi (San Francisco, CA), Desi Stoyanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria), and Paula Torre-Nieto (San Juan, PR) with their time of 2:03.92, while the B team consisted of Nell Tarno (Moretown, VT), Nicole Ferreira (Fall River, Mass./BMC Durfee), Katarina Yuan (Blacksburg, VA), and Sarah Billings (Berkley, CA).
  • In the 1000-yard freestyle, Aidan Coffin Ness (Madison, Wis./Madison East) was second in 11:55.26 followed by Abby Bergman (Culver City, Calif./Vistamar) with a third place time of 12:03.70.
  • Action then moved to the 200-yard free which saw Charlotte Crandall (Lawrence, KS) finish second in 2:08.50, while Katherine Anderson (Willamsburg, MA) was third in 2:10.35.
  • In the 100-yard back, Meadows-McDonnell touched the wall second in 1:07.39 just ahead of Tarno in a third place time of 1:08.13.
  • Desi Stoyanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) delivered Smith's first win in the 200-yard fly in 2:20.69.
  • Paula Torre-Nieto (San Juan, PR) was runner-up in the 50-yard free in 26.96.
  • Crandall and Stoyanova posted second place finishes in the 100 free and 200 back, respectively.
  • Bergman had another impressive performance in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 1:06.05 for first place.
  • In the final event of the day, Smith finished less than a second behind Westfield State in the 400-yard free relay.

DIVING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Diving action kicked off on the 1-meter board where sophomore Abigail Hanna (Averill Park, N.Y./Doane Stuart) was the top finisher with a score of 266.65.
  • Senior Elly Stone (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) and sophomore Shoshanna Werblow were second and third with marks of 247.50 and 241.35.
  • Hanna had another strong performance on the 3-meter board as she posted a first place score with 282.45 points.
  • Werblow's mark of 241.85 was good for second, while Stone was fourth with 193.15 points.
